Eduard 70166 is a self-assembly model of the German fighter Messerschmitt Bf 109K-4 "Kurfürst" in 1:72 scale – the final mass-production variant of the most numerously produced fighter in history, introduced in late 1944. The kit is released in the popular ProfiPACK series, which as standard combines plastic sprues with colour photo-etched parts and painting masks.

The model reproduces the characteristic features of the K-4 version: the streamlined nose with faired-over fasteners, the enlarged wheel bulges and the tall wooden vertical tail used on some examples. The decals cover 6 marking options of Luftwaffe aircraft from 1944–1945, including machines of JG 3, JG 4, JG 27, JG 52, JG 53 and JG 77.

Building the model:

This 1:72 model stands out for its rich equipment straight from the box. The colour photo-etched parts — including instrument-panel elements and seatbelts — allow a striking cockpit interior to be achieved quickly without labour-intensive painting; the cockpit parts are best fitted before joining the fuselage halves. Because of the small scale and the fine photo-etched parts, the kit is recommended for intermediate modellers. The included masks make painting the canopy cleanly easier.

Late Bf 109K-4s were most often painted in the multi-colour, hard-edged Luftwaffe camouflage schemes using RLM colours (for example a light RLM 76 underside with green and grey mottling on the upper surfaces). It is recommended to apply the decals over a gloss coat to avoid decal silvering, and then to seal the model with a satin varnish. The exact paint codes for each of the 6 options are given in the instructions.

About the aircraft – Messerschmitt Bf 109K-4:

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 is the most numerously produced fighter in history and the mainstay German fighter throughout the Second World War. The K version, known as the "Kurfürst", was the final mass-production variant of the design, introduced in late 1944 to standardise production and gather the latest improvements into a single standard.

The Bf 109K-4 was powered by a Daimler-Benz DB 605D engine with a boost installation, offering high performance at altitude. The aircraft had a pressurised cockpit and reinforced armament with a cannon firing through the propeller hub. The K-4 fought in the Defence of the Reich in the final, dramatic period of the air war over Europe, when its effectiveness was already limited by shortages of fuel and experienced pilots.
