Eduard 7478 – Messerschmitt Bf 109 F-4, 1:72 plastic model kit

Eduard 7478 is a self-assembly model of the German Messerschmitt Bf 109 F-4 fighter in 1:72 scale. The F version, nicknamed "Friedrich", was the second production variant of the Bf 109 after a thorough aerodynamic redesign of the airframe.

What's in the box:

  • Eduard plastic parts
  • Decals for 5 marking options
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Model specifications:

  • Scale: 1:72
  • Product code: 7478
  • Manufacturer: Eduard
  • Assembled length: approx. 124 mm, wingspan: approx. 138 mm
  • Marking options: 5
  • Difficulty: intermediate

Note: the set does not include glue, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Assembly:

The kit consists of injection-moulded plastic parts joined with plastic cement. We recommend painting the cockpit interior before closing the fuselage halves. The small 1:72 parts call for precision – it is worth working calmly and dry-fitting parts before gluing.

We recommend applying the decals over a gloss coat, which limits the risk of decal silvering, and after drying sealing them with a matt or satin coat.

For painting we recommend the colours typical of German fighter aviation (e.g. grey-green camouflage with light undersides); the instructions give detailed schemes for the 5 options. The finish is usually matt or satin.

Required tools:

  • Modelling nippers for removing parts from the sprues
  • Modelling knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper
  • Plastic cement
  • Precise modelling tweezers
  • Primer, brushes and modelling paints
  • Modelling wash to emphasise details

About the aircraft – Messerschmitt Bf 109 F-4:

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was the main German fighter of the Second World War and one of the most heavily produced combat aircraft in history. The F version ("Friedrich") introduced aerodynamic refinements of the airframe – including new rounded wingtips and a more streamlined nose – improving performance over the earlier E variant.

The F version concentrated the armament in the forward fuselage: a pair of machine guns above the engine and a cannon firing through the propeller hub. The F-4 received the more powerful Daimler-Benz DB 601E engine and was used on the Eastern Front and in North Africa, among other theatres.

Specifications (Messerschmitt Bf 109 F-4):

  • Length: approx. 8.94 m
  • Wingspan: approx. 9.92 m
  • Height: approx. 2.60 m
  • Crew: 1
  • Powerplant: Daimler-Benz DB 601E inline engine, approx. 1,350 hp
  • Maximum speed: approx. 635 km/h
  • Armament: one 20 mm cannon firing through the propeller hub and two 7.92 mm machine guns above the engine
