1:72 scale plastic model kit of the reconnaissance aircraft Supermarine Spitfire PR Type G

IBG 72600 is an assembly kit reproducing the British photo-reconnaissance aircraft Supermarine Spitfire PR Type G. This version was developed from the Mk V airframe and adapted for reconnaissance at low and medium altitude, with photographic equipment installed in the fuselage. The boxing title "Playing with death" refers to the risk involved in solo reconnaissance flights over enemy territory.

Reconnaissance aircraft carried out their missions without support, relying on speed, altitude and camouflage rather than armament. The kit is well equipped – alongside plastic and clear parts it contains photo-etched parts, resin components and adhesive masks, letting you build a refined model of this less commonly seen Spitfire variant.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic parts and clear parts
  • Photo-etched parts
  • Resin components
  • Adhesive masks
  • Waterslide decal sheet
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Kit specifications:

  • Scale: 1:72
  • Catalogue number: 72600
  • Manufacturer: IBG Models
  • Assembled length: approx. 127 mm
  • Model wingspan: approx. 156 mm
  • Skill level: intermediate

Note: The kit does not include glue, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Building the model:

The model is well equipped and recommended for modellers with some experience. It is worth painting and finishing the cockpit before closing up the fuselage, and modelling tweezers and cyanoacrylate glue are useful for the photo-etched and resin parts. The adhesive masks make it easier to render the canopy framing evenly. Photo-reconnaissance aircraft usually wore special, uniform camouflage colours – most often shades of blue (such as PRU Blue), and sometimes light, pinkish schemes for low-altitude flights; the base for the decals should be glossy, and the model is best finished with a satin varnish.

Tools you will need:

  • Modelling side cutters for removing parts from the sprues
  • Hobby knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper for smoothing sprue-gate marks
  • Plastic cement and cyanoacrylate glue for the photo-etched and resin parts
  • Precision modelling tweezers
  • Brushes of various sizes or an airbrush
  • Modelling paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • A wash to bring out panel lines and details

About the aircraft – Supermarine Spitfire PR Type G:

The photo-reconnaissance versions of the Spitfire were created to put the fighter's excellent performance to use in aerial reconnaissance. Stripped of, or limited in, armament and fitted with cameras and extra fuel tanks, they flew long sorties over enemy territory, providing crucial intelligence.

The PR Type G variant was developed from the Mk V airframe for reconnaissance at low and medium altitude. Unlike many reconnaissance versions, it retained some defensive armament, giving the pilot a chance if intercepted. Reconnaissance flights were among the most dangerous of tasks – the pilot operated alone, without cover, relying on his own skill and the capabilities of the aircraft.

Original aircraft specifications (Supermarine Spitfire PR, based on the Mk V):

  • Type: single-seat photo-reconnaissance aircraft
  • Powerplant: Rolls-Royce Merlin inline engine
  • Equipment: photographic equipment in the fuselage
  • Wingspan: approx. 11.23 m
  • Length: approx. 9.12 m
  • Service period: Second World War
