Rye Field Model Landing Gear and Wheel Well Detail Set for MiG-21MF (RFM 6001) in 1:48 Scale – 3D Print

Rye Field Model 2121 is a set of detailed landing gear legs and wheel well parts 3D-printed in resin, designed for the MiG-21MF kit by Rye Field Model (no. 6001) in 1:48 scale. The parts replace their plastic counterparts and provide more precise reproduction of the wheel well structure, gear leg guides and retraction mechanism details — elements clearly visible when the gear is extended on the finished model.

The set is designed specifically for the RFM 6001 tooling, ensuring accurate fit without modification. It forms part of four detail sets developed by RFM in parallel with the MiG-21MF base kit.

What's in the box:

  • Main and nose landing gear leg parts 3D-printed in resin

  • Manufacturer: Rye Field Model
  • Dedicated kit: MiG-21MF by Rye Field Model (no. 6001)

3D-printed resin parts – precise detail unachievable by injection moulding

3D printing in resin allows the reproduction of internal wheel well structures with a precision unachievable by injection moulding — fine ribbing, hydraulic lines, wire looms and retraction mechanism details can all be rendered with full sharpness. On aircraft models displayed with deployed gear, the visibility of these details is very high, making high-quality wheel wells a significant factor in the overall appearance of the finished model.

Resin parts are attached using cyanoacrylate adhesive. Priming the resin surface before painting is recommended for good paint adhesion. The wheel wells of the MiG-21MF were typically painted white or light grey on the inside, contrasting with the external camouflage — it is worth completing this painting before fitting the gear legs.

About the aircraft – Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21MF (Fishbed-J):

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 is a Soviet tailed delta fighter that became one of the most widely produced and exported jet aircraft in history since entering service in 1959. The MF variant was powered by the Tumansky R-13-300 engine, fitted with the RP-22 Sapfir radar and featured a wider dorsal spine housing additional avionics. Produced in large numbers for the Soviet Air Forces and for export to dozens of countries, it became a symbol of Cold War combat aviation.

The MiG-21MF saw combat in numerous conflicts across several continents. Its landing gear — characteristically narrow and retracting into the fuselage — reflects the design compromises typical of Soviet lightweight fighters of the era and is one of the features that define the Fishbed's distinctive profile.

Original specifications (MiG-21MF):

  • Length: 15.76 m (with pitot tube)
  • Wingspan: 7.15 m
  • Height: 4.71 m
  • Maximum take-off weight: approx. 9,800 kg
  • Engine: Tumansky R-13-300, approx. 64.7 kN with afterburner
  • Maximum speed: approx. 2,230 km/h (Mach 2.1)
  • Service ceiling: approx. 17,500 m
  • Range: approx. 1,300 km (with underwing fuel tanks)
  • Armament: GSh-23L 23 mm cannon; missiles and pods on underwing pylons
  • Crew: 1 pilot

About the manufacturer – Rye Field Model:

Rye Field Model is a Chinese modelling brand known for highly detailed 1:35 scale armoured vehicle kits with fully detailed interiors and working link-and-length tracks. The company regularly releases Upgrade Solution sets for its own base kits, containing 3D-printed resin parts, photo-etched metal and other enhancement components, allowing the modeller to choose the level of detail appropriate to their ambitions and skills. The 1:48 MiG-21MF (no. 6001) and its companion detail sets confirm the brand's expansion beyond its established armour specialisation.
