T-Model TK35006 is a thin wooden sheet reproducing the deck planking of the German 80 ton Ssyms heavy flatcar, in the plank layout corresponding to the early version of the car. The set is intended for T-Model 1:35 models of the early Ssyms.

On a model, the deck of a heavy flatcar is a large open surface — and on a car displayed without a load it is the single most prominent element. Building it from real wood gives texture and depth of colour that painting a moulded surface will not reproduce, and it does so without demanding elaborate painting techniques.

Thin wooden decks – real texture instead of a smooth moulding

Planking moulded in plastic always shares one trait: the surface is uniform and smooth, because the mould reproduces the shape of the boards but not their structure. Wood, by contrast, carries its own grain, and paint, stain and washes soak into it unevenly — lighter where the fibre is harder, darker where it absorbs more. That fine, irregular spread of tones is exactly what the eye reads as real wood, and in 1:35 the deck texture is large enough for the difference to register immediately.

The sheet is fixed to the model's deck with PVA glue or cyanoacrylate. We suggest colouring it before fitting: stain, heavily thinned acrylics or a wash applied plank by plank, with a varying number of coats, produce tonal variation with little effort. Once dry, the gaps between planks can be emphasised with a darker wash, and service wear added with pigments — dust in the corners, track scuffing, oil and grease stains where the load stood. This is only one possible route; oils and drybrushing work just as well on wood.

About the prototype – Schwerer Plattformwagen Ssyms:

The Ssyms was a six-axle heavy flatcar of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, carried on two three-axle bogies and rated for loads of up to 80 tons. It was created for equipment ordinary flatcars could not handle, and it was the car responsible for moving German heavy armour by rail — Tiger I and Tiger II tanks, Panthers, Ferdinand/Elefant tank destroyers and Sturmtigers.

Railway loading gauge limits called for special preparation in the case of the Tiger I: before loading, the tank was fitted with narrow transport tracks and its outer road wheels were removed and carried along with the vehicle. On arrival the whole procedure was reversed. Loading and unloading scenes are among the most frequently modelled subjects combining armour with railway settings.

Running on standard 1435 mm gauge track, the car could travel across the entire continental European network, which allows it to be placed in a diorama set almost anywhere the German heavy tank battalions operated.
