Description

T-Model NATO camouflage mask set for the 1:72 M1114 HMMWV

T-Model TK72016 is a mask sheet for painting the three-colour NATO camouflage scheme on 1:72 models of the up-armoured HMMWV M1114 by T-Model. The masks define where the borders between the individual colours run, so that the colour division on the model matches the reference pattern.

The NATO scheme has a distinctive, fairly geometric patch layout in which departures from the pattern are easy to spot. The masks carry that layout onto the model unchanged and leave the modeller with what matters most at this stage — control over the thickness and coverage of each coat of paint.

What is in the box:

  • Sheet of camouflage paint masks

Camouflage paint masks – a repeatable pattern without freehand spraying

Spraying a multi-colour camouflage freehand in 1:72 means working with a very fine spray pattern over small areas, where every tremor of the hand shows on the finished model. Ready-cut masks move the burden from the hand to the sheet: the colour division follows the reference pattern and is repeatable, while the patch edges can be hard or softly blended depending on how the airbrush is handled.

A proven approach is to place the masks over a fully cured base coat, press the edges down carefully, apply several thin coats of the next colour with an airbrush and lift the masks once the paint has dried. The surface should be clean, dry and free of grease before masking.

The scheme itself has a history. The three-colour NATO camouflage of green, brown and black was adopted in the 1980s as the standard finish for the ground forces vehicles of the alliance in Europe. It replaced the earlier single-colour finishes and the four-colour MERDC scheme, introducing a common pattern for armies operating in the same theatre.

About the vehicle – HMMWV M1114:

Behind the M1114 designation stands the armoured variant of the HMMWV, or Humvee, built by AM General and referred to as the Up-Armored HMMWV. It entered service in the second half of the 1990s, with mass production falling after 2003, when experience in Iraq forced a substantial improvement in crew protection for light vehicles.

Here the hull armour is a factory solution rather than an improvised add-on: it is complemented by bullet-resistant glass and reinforced suspension, while the added weight is offset by a more powerful 6.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine. The vehicle was fitted with a gunner turret as standard, weighs around 5.5 t, carries a crew of four and reaches about 110 km/h.

Later modifications included the FRAG Kit 5 door and side armour package, the GPK turret and its armoured rotating O-GPK version, as well as CROWS remote weapon stations.
