Tamiya 35074 Tent Set with an Afrikakorps figure in 1:35 scale

The Tamiya 35074 set is a small, complete vignette: a field tent, a radio set, a crate and a jerry can with a Deutsches Afrikakorps soldier sitting on it, dressed in tropical uniform with shorts. A base and a little sand are all you need to turn it into a signals post in North Africa.

Please note: despite the plural in the name, the set contains one tent. Its entrance can be built open – which lets you show the interior and the figure at the radio – or closed. The parts come from 1975 tooling and match the scale and style of the other sets in the Tamiya 1:35 range.

Assembly and painting required

The parts have to be removed from the sprues, cleaned up, assembled and painted. Cement, paints and modelling tools are not included in the set and must be obtained separately.

Use in a diorama:

• A field signals post or command post in a desert setting
• A camp beside a vehicle – the tent pitched next to a tank, armoured car or truck
• A halted column: the figure at the radio, with the crate and jerry can as natural details
• The tent built with a closed entrance as a background element, with no need to paint the interior

The Deutsches Afrikakorps and the desert war:

The Deutsches Afrikakorps arrived in North Africa in February 1941, sent to support the allied Italian forces in Libya. The fighting took place across vast, open terrain with no natural cover, where supply, reliable communications and the ability to move units quickly over long distances decided the outcome.

In these conditions a tent served as an office, a workshop and shelter from the sun – it was pitched next to vehicles, command posts and signals stations. Field radios were essential for coordinating dispersed armoured units. Tropical uniforms with shorts, worn every day in the heat, became a hallmark of the theatre – exactly as worn by the figure in this set.
