Description

Tamiya turned brass 75 mm and 105 mm projectiles for StuG III kits in 1:35 scale

Tamiya 35198 is a set of turned brass projectiles and shell cases covering the ammunition of both calibres used on the StuG III chassis. The box contains 18 parts: 3 armour-piercing and 3 high-explosive projectiles for the 7.5 cm gun, 3 armour-piercing and 3 high-explosive projectiles for the 10.5 cm howitzer, and 6 empty shell cases.

The 7.5 cm ammunition is intended for the Tamiya 35197 kit (StuG III Ausf.G). The 10.5 cm projectiles correspond to the ammunition of the howitzer fitted to the Sturmhaubitze 42, built on the same chassis. The set does not include a metal barrel — projectiles and cases only. The base kit is not included and is purchased separately.

Turned brass projectiles – crisp detail with no mould parting line

Lathe-turned parts have sharp, symmetrical edges and a perfectly round cross-section, with none of the parting line that has to be cleaned off moulded plastic by hand. On ammunition seen close up the difference is obvious, and the contrast between the slender 7.5 cm round and the stubby 10.5 cm howitzer shell comes across clearly.

Projectiles and cases are a classic ingredient of ammunition-loading scenes and dioramas: laid out on the armour, protruding from an open hatch, stacked in a crate beside the vehicle or held by a loader figure. A primer intended for metal is recommended before painting, and brass cases can be left in bare metal and simply toned down with a wash.

About the vehicle – Sturmgeschütz III:

The StuG III was the most numerous German armoured vehicle of the Second World War. Built on the Panzer III chassis as an assault gun for infantry support, it had no turret: the gun sat in a low, well-armoured superstructure. The low silhouette made it easy to conceal and well suited to ambush tactics.

Originally armed with the short 7.5 cm StuK 37 L/24, from 1942 it received the long-barrelled StuK 40 (L/43 and then L/48) and became an effective tank destroyer. The Ausf.G, produced from December 1942 until the end of the war, was the most numerous version, with a new superstructure, a commander cupola and, in time, the Saukopf mantlet and side skirts.

The same chassis carried the Sturmhaubitze 42, armed with a 10.5 cm howitzer for destroying fortifications and supporting infantry with indirect fire. Both vehicles fought on every front and formed the backbone of the German assault artillery.

  • Length with gun: approx. 6.85 m
  • Hull length: approx. 5.56 m
