Description

Plastic model kit of the Focke-Wulf Fw190 D-9 fighter in 1:72 scale

Tamiya 60751 depicts the Focke-Wulf Fw190 D-9 – the version of the famous Fw190 fighter in which the radial engine was replaced by an inline Junkers Jumo 213. A lengthened nose and extended rear fuselage gave the aircraft a new, slender shape, and its popular nickname 'Dora' (from the letter D) became its recognisable mark.

The kit is from Tamiya's own tooling, with a detailed cockpit interior. The decals finish the aircraft in the colours of two Luftwaffe units of 1945.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic sprues with fuselage, wing and tail parts
  • Detailed cockpit interior
  • Clear canopy parts
  • Waterslide decal sheet for 2 marking options (units of 1945)
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Model specifications:

  • Scale: 1:72
  • Item number: 60751
  • Manufacturer: Tamiya
  • Assembled length: approx. 142 mm, wingspan: approx. 146 mm
  • Skill level: beginner/intermediate

Note: glue, paints and modelling tools are not included. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Building the model:

As a Tamiya-tooled kit it features good parts fit. Paint the cockpit interior before closing the fuselage and fit the canopy last, after painting.

Fw190 D-9s wore late-war Luftwaffe camouflage made up of various shades of grey and green (including RLM 82, RLM 83 and RLM 75) on top over a light underside (RLM 76). Lay the decals over a gloss coat to avoid silvering, then finish with a satin varnish. The instructions provide paint references for both schemes.

Tools you'll need:

  • Modelling nippers for removing parts from the sprues
  • Hobby knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper for cleaning up sprue-gate marks
  • Plastic cement (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
  • Brushes of various sizes and modelling paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • Panel-line wash to emphasise detail and recesses
  • Gloss varnish for the decals and a satin coat to finish
  • Optional: self-adhesive canopy masks

About the aircraft – Focke-Wulf Fw190 D-9:

The Fw190 was one of the best German fighters of the Second World War. The early radial-engined versions performed well at low and medium altitudes but were outclassed by Allied fighters higher up. The answer was to fit an inline Jumo 213 engine.

The resulting D-9 version – the 'Dora' – regained its high-altitude performance and became one of the best German piston fighters of the late war, though it entered service too late and in too small numbers to affect its course.

Original aircraft specifications (Fw190 D-9):

  • Length: 10.19 m
  • Wingspan: 10.50 m
  • Height: 3.36 m
  • Max take-off weight: approx. 4,270 kg
  • Powerplant: Junkers Jumo 213A inline engine (V12, liquid-cooled), approx. 1,750 hp (more with MW 50)
  • Max speed: approx. 685 km/h
  • Armament: two 20 mm cannon and two 13 mm machine guns
  • Crew: 1
  • In service: from 1944
