The Trumpeter 05361 kit represents the German battleship Scharnhorst, one of the most famous warships of the Kriegsmarine during World War II. The ship combined speed, firepower and armor, taking part in major operations against Allied convoys in the Atlantic and Arctic. Scharnhorst met its fate in the Battle of the North Cape in December 1943, when it was sunk by the Royal Navy.

About the Scharnhorst:

Launched in 1936 and commissioned in 1939, the Scharnhorst was one of two ships of her class, alongside Gneisenau. Equipped with nine 283 mm guns, she was faster than most Allied battleships, with a top speed exceeding 31 knots. Scharnhorst participated in operations against British convoys, including the sinking of the auxiliary cruiser HMS Rawalpindi, and took part in Operation Cerberus (the “Channel Dash”) in 1942. On December 26, 1943, during the Battle of the North Cape, Scharnhorst was sunk by British forces led by HMS Duke of York, with the loss of nearly her entire crew.
