Turned metal barrels – a quick model upgrade

Replacing plastic barrels with turned metal ones is one of the simplest ways to raise the realism of a ship model. The metal finish gives a crisp, even muzzle edge that is hard to achieve on injection-moulded parts. Cyanoacrylate glue works well for bonding metal to plastic during assembly.

About the ship – Richelieu and Jean Bart:

Richelieu and Jean Bart were French battleships of the Richelieu class, designed in the 1930s. Their most distinctive feature was the arrangement of the entire main armament — eight 380 mm guns — in two quadruple turrets placed forward.

Richelieu entered service in 1940 and operated alongside the Allies for most of the Second World War, including in the Indian Ocean. Jean Bart was completed only after the war and remained in service until the 1960s.

Original specifications:

  • Type: Richelieu-class battleship
  • Country: France
  • Main armament: 8 x 380 mm guns (2 quadruple turrets)
  • Commissioned: Richelieu 1940, Jean Bart after 1945
