Painting masks for markings – an alternative to decals

This set contains laser-cut masks for painting U.S. national insignia and D-Day invasion stripes directly onto the model instead of applying decals. Painted markings sit in the same layer as the camouflage paint, so they have no visible carrier-film edge and no risk of decal silvering on a matt surface.

The masks are made of low-tack yellow self-adhesive paper. The recommended method is to apply the mask to a cured surface, spray the successive colours with an airbrush and remove the masks once the paint has dried. This solution is particularly recommended where a uniform, matt finish without film gloss is desired.

About the aircraft – North American P-51B Mustang:

The North American P-51 Mustang is one of the most famous fighters of the Second World War. The breakthrough came from mating an aerodynamically refined airframe with the British Rolls-Royce Merlin engine (built under licence in the USA by Packard as the V-1650), which gave the aircraft outstanding high-altitude performance.

The P-51B version (and the sister P-51C from the Dallas plant) was the first Merlin-engined variant, with the distinctive framed "birdcage" canopy, later often replaced by the sliding Malcolm Hood. It was Mustangs of this generation that began escorting the heavy bombers of the 8th Air Force on deep raids over Germany, radically changing the course of the air war over Europe.

Original specifications (P-51B Mustang):

  • Length: approx. 9.8 m
  • Wingspan: approx. 11.3 m
  • Crew: 1
  • Powerplant: Packard V-1650 (Merlin) inline engine, approx. 1,450 hp
  • Maximum speed: approx. 710 km/h
  • Range with drop tanks: over 1,600 km
  • Armament: 4 × 12.7 mm machine guns
