A thinner is an indispensable thing while painting any model kit - both using paintbrush and airbrush.

Proper thinner lowers paint thickness and viscosity, which allows it to pass through the airbrush nozzle or spread more evenly on the painted surface if we're using a paintbrush. Most important is choosing the right thinner for paints we use - usually the safest option is to look at products recommended by paint maker. Doing so we won't worsen or change the paint properties. There are three main types of model paints - oil enamels that can be thinned using White Spirit or odourless thinner, waterbased acrylic paints that can be thinned using tap water or alcohol and solvent based acrylic paints that require special solvents to thin them down. Usually when using a paintbrush you have thin the paint only a little to improve its flow and slightly lessen the viscosity. For airbrushing paint must be thinned much more, at least in a 3:1 thinner to pain ratio. Generally you want the paint in the airbrush cup to have a consistency similar to milk.
