Description

Model of the electric locomotive BR 184.1 „Europa-Lok” in the livery of the German Federal Railway

A model of the electric locomotive BR 184.1 of the German Federal Railway (DB) in Era IV – a 2026 novelty with which PIKO brings the famous „Europa-Loks” onto H0 tracks. Adapted to various power systems in Germany, France, Belgium and Luxembourg, these machines significantly facilitated cross-border traffic.

The model stands out for its richly detailed roof with metal pantographs mounted without visible screws, delicate grilles and engravings on the side walls, and a reproduced engine room visible through the cab door. The whole is rounded off by precise paintwork and sharp printing. The PIKO Expert model has a PluX22 interface for easy decoder fitting.

Note: controlling and powering the model.

The model is produced in the analogue DC version. An ordinary direct-current controller is enough to run it – no digital command station is required. The model has a factory-fitted decoder socket (NEM 658 (PluX22)), which allows easy later digital conversion to DCC control. Sound can be added by fitting PIKO sound decoder no. 56644. The model is not a starter set and does not include track or a controller.

Model railways – digital or analogue control?

A digital DCC system lets you control several locomotives independently on the same track at a constant rail voltage, whereas in an analogue system all vehicles on a given circuit respond simultaneously to changes in the supply voltage. The model described here is supplied in the analogue version (for direct current DC), with a decoder socket allowing later conversion to digital DCC control.

About the class 184 locomotive (E 410, the „Europa-Lok”):

Class E 410 (designated class 184 from 1968) is a family of multi-system electric locomotives of the German Federal Railway (DB), designed for cross-border traffic. They were adapted to work under different power-supply systems – in Germany, France and the Benelux countries – which made cross-border traffic considerably easier by eliminating the time-consuming change of locomotives at border stations. The many supply voltages they could handle earned them the nickname „Europa-Lok”.

The Bo'Bo' locomotives were built in the mid-1960s (ordered in 1964) in a small number of units, in variants from different manufacturers (including AEG and BBC – hence the 184.1 sub-class). Their characteristic feature was four pantographs adapted to the individual systems. The first scheduled services ran from 1969 on the route from Cologne to Liège in Belgium.

Original technical data (class 184 / E 410):

  • Type: multi-system electric locomotive, Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement
  • Power systems: Germany, France, the Benelux countries (four pantographs)
  • Construction: mid-1960s (ordered 1964); variants from different manufacturers (including AEG, BBC)
  • Use: cross-border train traffic (eliminating locomotive changes at the border)
  • Nickname: „Europa-Lok”
  • Operator: German Federal Railway (DB)
  • Era: IV

About the manufacturer – PIKO:

Today it is one of the largest model railway manufacturers in Europe and offers models in many scales, including H0. Models from the PIKO Expert line stand out for their high level of detail – separately fitted parts, precise printing and metal pantographs – and thanks to standard decoder sockets they are prepared for digital conversion. PIKO is valued by modellers for combining build quality with an affordable price.
