History of the TKt48 locomotive
The TKt48 class steam tank locomotives were designed as universal engines for passenger and freight services on mountainous and secondary lines. Between 1950 and 1957, 191 units were built for PKP by Fablok and Cegielski.
With a maximum speed of 80 km/h in both directions and high adhesive weight, TKt48 locomotives revolutionized operations on branch lines in mountainous regions such as the Sudetes and Tatra Mountains.
Declining traffic and line closures led to their withdrawal by 1989, although several examples survive today as preserved museum locomotives.
