H0 scale model of the PKP Tr12 steam freight locomotive – analog version, Era III

PIKO 50800 is a highly detailed H0 scale model of the Tr12 steam freight locomotive, one of the most important heavy goods locomotives used by Polish State Railways. This version represents a PKP locomotive from Era III and is designed for analog DC operation.

  • Scale: H0 (1:87)
  • Model length (over buffers): 200 mm
  • Railway administration: PKP – Polish State Railways
  • Era: III
  • Control system: analog DC
  • Decoder interface: NEM 658 – 22-pin (PluX22)
  • Lighting: direction-dependent white/red headlights
  • Cab lighting: available after digital decoder installation
  • Smoke function: not fitted (no smoke generator)
  • Traction tyres: 2
  • Minimum radius: 422 mm
  • Couplings: NEM coupling pocket
  • The model is painted and ready to run

The model features finely detailed running gear with metal wheelsets, delicate valve gear and numerous separately applied details such as pumps, pipes and handrails. Its solid mechanical construction ensures smooth and reliable operation on H0 layouts.

Thanks to the PluX22 decoder interface, the locomotive can easily be upgraded to digital control and sound, allowing modellers to customise the model according to their preferences.

History of the Tr12 locomotive

Between 1897 and 1919, Austrian locomotive works produced more than 830 class 170 locomotives for heavy freight service. A superheated steam version was later developed, retaining the proven chassis while improving efficiency.

In Poland, these locomotives became known as class Tr12 and were adapted to local requirements with larger superheaters, extended chimneys, Westinghouse air brakes and modified cabs. They played a key role in freight transport, particularly in southern regions of the country.

After World War II, 39 locomotives returned to PKP service, with the last units withdrawn in 1969. The Tr12 marked an important milestone in the transition from saturated to superheated steam technology.
