Building the model:

The model is simple to build and makes an excellent first military vehicle for a collection. Most of the attention goes into arranging the desert equipment – it is worth painting these parts separately and adding them once the body is painted, planning the composition so the vehicle looks genuinely laden.

The key decision, of course, is the shade of pink. In practice it works well to mix your own from sand tones with a little red added – testing it on a spare piece of sprue before it goes anywhere near the model. The result benefits greatly from heavy weathering: dust, streaking and chipping stop the pink looking like a toy and start making it look like a vehicle that has spent weeks in the desert. A brown wash brings out the detail, and pigments on the wheels and chassis finish the job. Military vehicle models are usually finished with a matt varnish.

The name “Pink Panther” came from its most conspicuous feature – the pink paint. Contrary to first impressions, this was not an extravagance but the result of practical observation: at dawn and dusk, when the desert light takes on a pinkish cast, such a vehicle blends into the background far more effectively than one painted sand or khaki. And those were precisely the hours when patrols moved most often.

The Pink Panthers served for years as a tool of reconnaissance and deep operations – with no armour at all, but with the range, payload and equipment to operate independently in conditions where an ordinary vehicle would stand no chance. They remain one of the most recognisable symbols of British special forces to this day.
