Description

1:35 plastic model kit of the German Panzer IV Ausf.J medium tank

No other German tank served in the front line throughout the entire war the way the Panzer IV did – from the Polish campaign to the final battles of 1945. The Ausf.J was its last incarnation: simplified, built amid dwindling resources, yet still dangerous thanks to the long-barrelled 7.5 cm KwK 40 L/48 gun. Tamiya 35181 reproduces it in 1:35 scale, from an all-new 1994 mould.

The model captures the features of the J version, including its production simplifications and skirt fittings – the kit provides the rails and brackets for the hull side skirts as well as the turret skirts. Vinyl belt tracks speed up the running gear, and a length of string is supplied for the tow cable.

What’s in the box:

  • Plastic sprues with hull, turret and equipment parts
  • Rails and brackets for the hull side skirts, plus turret skirts
  • Vinyl belt tracks
  • String for the tow cable
  • Commander figure
  • Waterslide decal sheet for 3 marking options
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Model specifications:

  • Scale: 1:35
  • Product number: 35181
  • Manufacturer: Tamiya
  • Assembled model length: approx. 201 mm
  • Skill level: beginner

Note: This kit does not include cement, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Building the model:

This is a new-mould kit with excellent parts fit and clear instructions – a good choice for a first German tank. The vinyl belt tracks close up the running gear quickly. The thin skirt rails and brackets deserve careful handling: clean up the sprue gate marks thoroughly and leave them until the final stage of the build.

Vehicles in France in 1944 wore three-tone camouflage: a dark yellow base (e.g. Tamiya XF-60 Dark Yellow) with patches of dark green (XF-61 Dark Green) and red brown (XF-64 Red Brown); paint codes for all options are given in the instructions. Applying decals over a gloss coat is recommended to reduce silvering, and a matt varnish suits the final finish. To take the level of detail further you may want to consider separately sold Tamiya accessories: the 12650 zimmerit sheet, 35182 brass shells and the 35185 equipment set – all standalone products that are not included in this box.

Tools you will need:

  • Sprue cutters
  • Hobby knife or scalpel
  • Files and sanding paper for cleaning up sprue gate marks
  • Plastic cement (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
  • Precision modelling tweezers
  • Brushes in a range of sizes
  • Model paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • A wash to accentuate details and recesses
  • Optional: pigments for dust and mud effects

About the vehicle – Panzer IV Ausf.J:

The Panzer IV was designed in the 1930s as a support tank, originally armed with a short-barrelled gun for destroying strongpoints. When well-armoured Soviet tanks appeared on the Eastern Front, it was rearmed with the long-barrelled 7.5 cm KwK 40, turning it into a full anti-tank weapon – and extending its career to the end of the war.

The Ausf.J, produced from June 1944, was the final version. The electric turret traverse was deleted (the turret was now hand-cranked), freeing space for an additional fuel tank and greater range. The change was typical of the late war: simplified production and a practical compromise at the crew’s expense.

Panzer IV Ausf.J tanks fought on every front in the last year of the war, including Normandy and France, where they also served with Waffen-SS units. The Panzer IV was the most widely produced German tank of the Second World War.

Original vehicle specifications (Panzer IV Ausf.J):

  • Length: approx. 7.02 m (gun forward)
  • Width: approx. 2.88 m
  • Height: approx. 2.68 m
  • Combat weight: approx. 25 t
  • Crew: 5
  • Main armament: 7.5 cm KwK 40 L/48 gun
  • Secondary armament: 7.92 mm MG 34 machine guns
  • Powerplant: Maybach HL 120 TRM petrol engine, 300 hp
  • Top speed: approx. 38 km/h (road)
  • Armour: 80 mm (hull front)
  • Production: from June 1944 – simplified version (electric turret traverse deleted in favour of extra fuel capacity)

About the manufacturer – Tamiya:

Tamiya Corporation is a Japanese model company founded in 1946 by Yoshio Tamiya in Shizuoka, regarded as the centre of the Japanese model industry. The company originally traded in timber and moved on to wooden models in the late 1940s. Its first plastic model kit appeared in 1960, and two years later came its first 1:35 tank – the scale that, thanks to Tamiya, became the worldwide standard for military modelling. The brand is known for precise injection moulds, outstanding parts fit and clear instructions, which is why its kits are equally popular with beginners and experienced modellers. The Military Miniature Series, to which this kit belongs, runs to hundreds of releases covering vehicles, artillery and figures from around the world. Alongside plastic kits, Tamiya offers a full range of modelling accessories: paints, cements, tools and brushes. The company is present in dozens of countries and remains one of the most recognisable names in the hobby.
