Description

Self-assembly model of the K9A1 self-propelled howitzer — Academy 15403, 4D Kit series

Academy 15403 reproduces the K9A1 Thunder, the upgraded version of the Korean 155 mm K9 self-propelled howitzer. The kit belongs to the 4D Kit series (sold in Korea as the 4D Color Kit), prepared for a quick build with no modelling chemicals involved.

The parts are pre-coloured and snap together, so glue and paint are not needed. The kit contains a small number of components (approx. 20–40), the difficulty level is very low and the recommended age is 8 and up. Once assembled, the vehicle is ready for display.

What's in the box:

  • Pre-coloured plastic parts
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Model specifications:

  • Scale: not specified by the manufacturer
  • Catalogue number: 15403
  • Manufacturer: Academy
  • Series: 4D Kit
  • Recommended age: 8 and up
  • Difficulty level: beginner

Note: This model is intended for self-assembly. The kit does not include paints or modelling tools.

Assembly:

The build relies on snap-fit connections and the parts are coloured at the factory, so glue and paint are not required. The components simply need to be separated and assembled following the illustrated instructions, taking a moment to clean up the gate marks.

Modellers who want a more realistic result can paint the model, or use a wash to bring out the running gear, recesses and the details of the hull and turret. This is a suggestion rather than a condition — the kit looks good without any extra work.

Tools you may need:

  • Sprue cutters — if the parts are attached to runners
  • Hobby knife or scalpel
  • File and sanding paper to smooth the gate marks
  • Optional: modelling paints and brushes if you wish to paint the model
  • Optional: a wash to accentuate the details

About the vehicle – K9A1 Thunder:

The K9 Thunder is a Korean 155 mm self-propelled howitzer built by Hanwha and one of the most widely exported designs of its class. Its armament is a 155 mm L/52 howitzer able to engage targets at around 40 km with base bleed ammunition.

The A1 version is an upgrade introducing a new fire control and navigation system, an auxiliary power unit and a night vision camera for the driver. These changes improve night-time capability and shorten the time needed to prepare for firing.

The design also has a Polish connection: the K9 chassis is used by the AHS Krab howitzer, and Poland has ordered K9A1 guns as well. That makes the vehicle one of the more recognisable artillery systems in Polish service today.

Original specifications (K9A1):

  • Weight: approx. 47 t
  • Crew: 5
  • Main armament: 155 mm L/52 howitzer
  • Range: approx. 40 km with base bleed ammunition
  • Powerplant: engine of approx. 1000 hp
  • Maximum speed: approx. 67 km/h

About the manufacturer – Academy:

Academy Plastic Model is a Korean model company that has been in business since 1969 and is one of the most recognisable brands in that part of the world. Its catalogue covers aircraft, armour, ships and cars in the popular scales, alongside educational and construction sets. The brand is valued for its broad choice of subjects and for kits that are approachable for beginners. Korean military hardware holds a special place in the range — domestically built aircraft, tanks and artillery that are rarely offered by other manufacturers. The 4D Kit series extends this direction towards fast builds that snap together from pre-coloured parts. Academy exports to dozens of countries and has been a fixture of the European model market for years.
