Description

F-35A Lightning II Freedom Knight fighter self-assembly model – Academy 4D Kit

Academy 15406 depicts the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II multirole fighter in Republic of Korea Air Force markings. "Freedom Knight" is the official Korean nickname given to these aircraft by that air force, so the kit represents a specific Korean chapter in the story of the type rather than just another F-35.

The kit belongs to the 4D Kit series, in which the parts snap together without glue. The parts are coloured at the factory, so painting is not required and the model is ready for display as soon as it is finished. Kits in this series usually contain around 20 to 40 parts, which makes for a very low difficulty level and a build that fits into a single sitting. The manufacturer recommends it from age 8.

What's in the box:

  • Coloured plastic parts
  • Illustrated assembly instructions
  • Painting guide sheet

Kit specifications:

  • Scale: not specified by the manufacturer
  • Product code: 15406
  • Manufacturer: Academy
  • Series: 4D Kit
  • Age: 8 and up
  • Difficulty level: beginner

Please note: this is a self-assembly model. Paints and modelling tools are not included.

Building the model:

Snap-fit connections and factory-coloured parts mean a pair of nippers and a little care are all you need. It is worth cutting the parts with a small margin and then smoothing the remains of the gates with a file or sanding paper, so the edges line up neatly once the parts click together.

For those who want to go further, an aircraft with smooth, faceted surfaces is a rewarding subject: a light wash in the panel lines and some hand-painting of the cockpit and exhaust details are enough to bring out its character. This is a suggestion only – the kit is complete without any painting.

Tools you will need:

  • Modelling nippers for removing parts from the sprues
  • A hobby knife or scalpel
  • A file or sanding paper to smooth the gate marks
  • Optional: model paints, brushes and a wash, for builders who want to add their own painting

About the aircraft – F-35A Lightning II Freedom Knight:

The Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II is a single-seat fifth-generation multirole combat aircraft designed for conventional runway operations. The design combines reduced observability, extensive avionics and wide-ranging data sharing between aircraft, with weapons carried primarily in internal bays so the clean outline of the airframe is preserved.

The Republic of Korea ordered 40 F-35As, delivered between 2019 and 2022, and later decided to buy a further 20 aircraft in a second batch. It was the Korean air force that gave the aircraft the "Freedom Knight" nickname, which serves as the official name for these machines in Republic of Korea Air Force service.

Within the Korean defence system, the F-35A provides a capability to operate in areas covered by dense air defences, complementing the older combat types still in the line-up.

Original aircraft specifications (F-35A Lightning II):

  • Length: 15.7 m
  • Wingspan: 10.7 m
  • Height: 4.36 m
  • Crew: 1
  • Powerplant: Pratt & Whitney F135 engine, approx. 191 kN with afterburner
  • Top speed: approx. Mach 1.6
  • Armament: carried in internal weapon bays, plus a 25 mm GAU-22/A cannon
  • Operator depicted by the kit: Republic of Korea Air Force
  • Korean deliveries: 40 aircraft between 2019 and 2022, plus 20 in a second batch

About the manufacturer – Academy:

Academy Plastic Model is a Korean manufacturer of assembly kits, in business since 1969. Its catalogue covers aircraft, ships, armour and civilian vehicles in the popular modelling scales, along with educational sets and simple kits aimed at younger builders. The brand is known for its broad range of Korean subjects – both modern Republic of Korea military hardware and cars from that market. Academy mouldings feature crisp engraved detail and good part fit, and the instructions are illustrated step by step, which helps less experienced modellers. A separate part of the catalogue consists of series with factory-coloured parts and snap-fit assembly, including the 4D Kit line. Academy kits are sold worldwide and have long been among the most widely chosen sets in the affordable segment.
