3D-printed armament - sharp detail on small parts

Small arms in 1:35 require very fine elements - the cooling shroud fins, sights and magazine. 3D printing achieves that sharpness while keeping thin cross-sections. The parts are attached with cyanoacrylate glue; before painting it is worth gently cleaning the surface of any print-support marks. Airbrushing is recommended, picking out the detail with a wash.

About the Lewis machine gun:

The Lewis is a light machine gun fed from a distinctive pan magazine, widely used by British and Commonwealth forces from the First World War onward. A recognisable feature of the infantry version was the thick barrel shroud acting as a cooling jacket. The weapon was used in infantry, aircraft and various mounted forms, including anti-aircraft mounts.

Light machine guns on anti-aircraft mounts were a common way of giving columns, vehicles and outposts an improvised defence against aircraft during the WWI and interwar period. The anti-aircraft stand raised the weapon and allowed fire at high elevation.

Original specifications (Lewis machine gun):

  • Type: light machine gun
  • Feed: pan (drum) magazine
  • User: British Army and Commonwealth forces
  • Service period: from the First World War and through the interwar years
