Plastic model kit of the Mitsubishi Ki-46-III Koh “Dinah” Interceptor

Hasegawa 02490 in 1:72 scale represents the Mitsubishi Ki-46-III Koh “Dinah” modified into an interceptor variant. Originally designed as a high-speed reconnaissance aircraft, the Ki-46 was converted late in WWII to counter the threat of Boeing B-29 Superfortress raids over Japan. These interceptors were equipped with oblique-firing cannons, inspired by German night fighter tactics, in an effort to boost their effectiveness against high-altitude bombers.

Model specifications:

  • Scale: 1:72
  • Model length: approx. 17.5 cm
  • Wingspan: approx. 23.8 cm
  • Manufacturer: Hasegawa

Model building:

The kit includes finely detailed fuselage, two-seat cockpit, landing gear, and interceptor-specific armament. Decals are provided for aircraft operating during the late stages of WWII. With clear instructions and precise part fit, this model is ideal for both beginner and intermediate builders.

Recommended tools:

  • Modeling knife or sprue cutters
  • Files or sanding sticks
  • Brushes and/or airbrush
  • Plastic cement
  • Paints in late-war Japanese Army Air Force schemes
  • Optional cyanoacrylate glue for fine details

About the Mitsubishi Ki-46 “Dinah”:

The Mitsubishi Ki-46, codenamed “Dinah” by the Allies, was a twin-engine reconnaissance aircraft used by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. The Ki-46-III variant featured improved engines and aerodynamics, making it one of the fastest Japanese aircraft of WWII. In its interceptor role, some were equipped with a 37 mm cannon and two 20 mm cannons, intended to engage high-flying B-29 bombers. Though results were limited, the Dinah Interceptor illustrates Japan’s desperate late-war attempts to defend against overwhelming Allied air power.

Technical data of the original (Ki-46-III Kai Interceptor):

  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Japan)
  • Crew: 2
  • Engines: 2 × Mitsubishi Ha-112-II, 1500 hp each
  • Maximum speed: approx. 630 km/h
  • Range: approx. 2000 km
