Plastic model kit of the Douglas DB-7B / Boston III light bomber in 1:48 scale – limited edition

HK Models 01F015-LTD represents the Douglas DB-7B / Boston III – a twin-engine light bomber and attack aircraft, the export derivative of the American A-20 Havoc, widely used by the RAF and other Allied forces during World War II. This is the version with a glazed bombardier nose, intended for bombing from low and medium altitude.

This is a limited edition which, unlike the standard 01F015 kit, additionally includes a 3D-printed cockpit set, twin machine guns and a poster. The model is based on HK Models' new tooling, with a refined panel texture (a stressed-skin effect), a full interior and rich multimedia content.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic sprues with fuselage, wing and glazed-nose components
  • Full cockpit and compartment interior
  • 3D-printed cockpit set (a limited-edition feature)
  • Twin machine guns (a limited-edition feature)
  • Photo-etched parts and masks
  • Metal landing-gear legs and nose weights
  • Poster and a decal sheet for two marking options
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Model specifications:

  • Scale: 1:48
  • Catalogue number: 01F015-LTD (limited edition)
  • Manufacturer: HK Models (Hong Kong Models)
  • Assembled length: approx. 300 mm, wingspan: approx. 391 mm
  • Difficulty level: advanced

Note: This kit does not include cement, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Assembly:

This is a refined model with a full interior and rich multimedia content, best suited to an experienced modeller. The cockpit interior – enhanced with photo-etched parts and the 3D-printed cockpit set – is worth painting and finishing before closing the fuselage; much of the detail will remain visible through the large glazing. Remember to fit the weights in the nose. Masking the glazing with the supplied masks is recommended.

For painting, RAF and USAAF schemes from 1942 are recommended – depending on the chosen option, a British camouflage on the upper surfaces with light undersides and the appropriate markings. Decals are best applied over a gloss coat to avoid silvering, with a matt or satin coat as the final finish. Exact paint codes are given in the manufacturer's instructions.

Required tools:

  • Modelling side cutters for removing parts from the sprues
  • Modelling knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper for cleaning up sprue gate marks
  • Plastic cement (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
  • Cyanoacrylate glue for photo-etched and metal parts
  • Masks or masking tape for the glazing
  • Brushes of various sizes and an airbrush for large surfaces
  • Modelling paints (acrylic or enamel) and a wash to emphasise detail

About the aircraft – Douglas DB-7B / Boston III:

The Douglas DB-7 / A-20 Havoc was an American twin-engine light bomber and attack aircraft, one of the most widely exported designs of its kind. Export versions went, among others, to France and Britain, where in RAF service the bomber variants were named "Boston" and the night fighters "Havoc".

The Boston III (DB-7B) is the version with a glazed bombardier nose, used by the RAF from 1942 for attacks on targets in occupied Europe from low and medium altitude. The aircraft was valued for its solid construction, good handling and versatility – suited both to conventional bombing and to low-level attacks.

Bostons and Havocs served in the air forces of many Allied nations, including the British, American and Soviet, taking part in operations on the western and eastern fronts and in the Mediterranean. They were one of the mainstays of Allied tactical aviation in the first half of the war.

Original aircraft specifications (DB-7B / Boston III):

  • Length: approx. 14.6 m
  • Wingspan: approx. 18.7 m
  • Height: approx. 5.36 m
  • Empty weight: approx. 7,250 kg; take-off weight: approx. 12,300 kg
  • Powerplant: two Wright R-2600 radial engines of approx. 1,600 hp each
  • Maximum speed: approx. 510 km/h
  • Ceiling: approx. 7,600 m
  • Range: approx. 1,700 km
  • Crew: 3
  • Armament: machine guns and a bomb load
  • A-20/DB-7 production (all versions): approx. 7,500 examples
