Plastic Model Kit of the German Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-6 Fighter in 1:48 Scale
Hobby Boss 81781 is a self-assembly plastic model kit representing one of the key development variants of the famous German Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighter — the A-6 version introduced into service in the summer of 1943. The 1:48 scale model allows the builder to recreate one of the most recognizable Luftwaffe aircraft, featuring the highly distinctive silhouette with the BMW 801 radial engine, short trapezoidal wings, and characteristic rounded blown canopy.
The A-6 version holds an important place in the history of the Fw 190 — it introduced the standardized lightweight wing armed with four 20 mm MG 151/20 cannons, giving the aircraft significantly increased firepower against Allied bombers. The model includes a well-detailed cockpit interior with instrument panel and pilot seat, an engine compartment with the BMW 801D-2 engine visible when the cowlings are removed, as well as photo-etched details and a clear canopy.
Inside the box you will find:
- Plastic sprues with fuselage, wing, and tailplane components
- Cockpit interior details including instrument panel and pilot seat
- BMW 801D-2 radial engine for display with opened cowlings
- Photo-etched parts sheet
- Clear canopy parts
- Water-slide decals for selected Luftwaffe marking options
- Illustrated assembly instructions
Model technical details:
- Scale: 1:48
- Catalog number: 81781
- Manufacturer: Hobby Boss
- Completed model length: approx. 186 mm, wingspan approx. 219 mm
- Difficulty level: intermediate
Note: The kit does not include glue, paints, or modeling tools. The model requires assembly and painting.
Building the model:
The kit requires careful assembly of the cockpit interior, which is best painted and detailed before joining the fuselage halves, as access becomes impossible afterward. It is also worth deciding in advance whether the engine cowlings will be displayed open to expose the BMW 801D-2 engine or closed, as this affects the assembly sequence of the engine compartment.
Typical paint schemes for the Fw 190A-6 include the two-tone gray-blue camouflage of upper surfaces (RLM 74 Graugrün and RLM 75 Grauviolett over RLM 76 Lichtblau undersides), as well as specialized night-fighter schemes, Eastern Front aircraft with temporary winter whitewash, or late-war finishes with extensive mottling. Popular paint choices include ranges from AK Real Colors, Mr. Hobby Aqueous, and Tamiya. A common technique is applying decals over a gloss varnish to prevent silvering, followed by a satin finish coat typical of wartime aircraft. For enhanced realism, separately available turned metal MG 151/20 barrels may also be added.
Essential tools:
- Model sprue cutters for removing parts from the sprues
- Modeling knife or scalpel
- Files and sandpaper for smoothing mold attachment points
- Plastic cement (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
- Cyanoacrylate glue for photo-etched parts
- Precision modeling tweezers
- Paint brushes in various sizes
- Model paints (acrylic or enamel)
- Modeling wash for highlighting panel lines
- Masking fluid or masking tape for the canopy
About the aircraft – Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-6:
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was a German fighter aircraft developed in the 1930s under the direction of Kurt Tank. The prototype first flew in 1939, and the aircraft entered operational service in 1941, initially surprising Allied pilots with performance superior to contemporary versions of the British Spitfire. The heart of the design was the air-cooled 14-cylinder BMW 801 radial engine, giving the Fw 190 its characteristic compact “nose” that distinguished it from most inline-engined fighters of the era.
The A-6 version entered service in the summer of 1943 as a development of earlier A-series variants. It introduced the standardized lighter wing armed with four 20 mm MG 151/20 cannons instead of the previous mixed armament arrangement, along with two 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns mounted above the engine. The strengthened wing armament was a response to the increasing need to combat Allied strategic bombers conducting large-scale raids over Germany. The A-6 also led to several specialized field conversion variants, including the A-6/R3 armed with two 30 mm MK 103 cannons in underwing gondolas, and the A-6/R6 equipped with WGr.21 210 mm air-to-air rocket launchers.
At least 936 Fw 190A-6 aircraft were produced, serving mainly in Reich defense units. The Fw 190 family became one of the Luftwaffe’s most important fighters during the second half of World War II, while later variants such as the D-9 and Ta 152 represented further development stages of Kurt Tank’s design.
Technical data of the original aircraft (Fw 190A-6):
- Length: 8.95 m
- Wingspan: 10.50 m
- Height: 3.95 m
- Empty weight: approx. 3,470 kg
- Maximum takeoff weight: approx. 4,400 kg
- Crew: 1 pilot
- Engine: BMW 801D-2 radial engine, approx. 1,700 hp
- Maximum speed: approx. 652 km/h
- Service ceiling: approx. 10,600 m
- Armament: 4 × 20 mm MG 151/20 cannons in the wings, 2 × 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns above the engine
- A-6 production: at least 936 aircraft
About the manufacturer – Hobby Boss:
Hobby Boss is a Chinese plastic model manufacturer belonging to the Trumpeter group, active since the 2000s. The company offers a very broad catalog of armored vehicle, aircraft, and ship kits in scales ranging from 1:144 to 1:18, covering both classic historical subjects (World War II, Cold War conflicts) and modern military vehicles and aircraft. Hobby Boss is known for its consistent approach to developing complete model series — multiple boxings of the same vehicle or aircraft are usually released, covering different variants and allowing modelers to build the exact version they are looking for. Hobby Boss kits are popular among intermediate-level modelers thanks to their strong balance between detail and accessibility.
