1:72 scale plastic model kit of the Su-20 in Polish Air Force colours

IBG 72908 is an assembly kit reproducing the variable-geometry fighter-bomber Su-20 in Polish Air Force colours. The Su-20 was an export version of the Soviet Su-17M, and in Polish service it acted as a ground-attack and fighter-bomber aircraft for many years of the Cold War.

The kit combines plastic parts and photo-etched parts from the Ukrainian company Modelsvit with an IBG-prepared decal sheet containing the complete set of stencils needed for a faithful rendition of Polish aircraft. It is an interesting proposition for fans of Polish Air Force aviation and of swing-wing aircraft.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic parts (Modelsvit) and clear parts
  • Photo-etched parts (Modelsvit)
  • IBG decal sheet with a complete set of stencils
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Kit specifications:

  • Scale: 1:72
  • Catalogue number: 72908
  • Manufacturer: IBG Models (Modelsvit parts)
  • Assembled length: approx. 260 mm
  • Model wingspan: depends on the sweep angle (approx. 190 mm spread, approx. 139 mm swept)
  • Skill level: intermediate/advanced

Note: The kit does not include glue, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Building the model:

The Modelsvit parts are produced using short-run tooling, so the model is recommended for experienced modellers – expect to do more careful fitting and clean-up of some parts. It is worth painting the cockpit and wheel bays before closing up the fuselage, and modelling tweezers and cyanoacrylate glue are useful for the photo-etched parts. Polish Su-20s typically wore multi-colour tactical camouflage in shades of green, brown and grey on the upper surfaces with light blue undersides; the rich stencil sheet is best applied over a glossy base, and the model finished with a satin or matt varnish.

Tools you will need:

  • Modelling side cutters for removing parts from the sprues
  • Hobby knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper for smoothing sprue-gate marks and seams
  • Modelling filler
  • Plastic cement and cyanoacrylate glue for the photo-etched parts
  • Precision modelling tweezers
  • Airbrush or brushes and modelling paints
  • A wash to bring out panel lines and details

About the aircraft – Su-20:

The Su-20 is an export version of the Soviet fighter-bomber Su-17M – one of the first Soviet variable-geometry designs. The moving outer wing sections allowed it to combine good low-speed handling (with the wings spread) and high performance in high-speed flight (with the wings swept).

The Polish Air Force introduced the Su-20 into service in the 1970s, using it as a ground-attack and fighter-bomber aircraft able to carry a wide range of external stores. These aircraft were an important part of Polish combat aviation throughout the Cold War period for many years, before being replaced by newer designs.

Original aircraft specifications (Su-20):

  • Type: variable-geometry fighter-bomber
  • Powerplant: afterburning turbojet engine
  • Armament: 30 mm cannon and external stores
  • Length: approx. 18.75 m
  • Wingspan: variable, depending on the sweep angle
  • User: Polish Air Force (export version of the Su-17M)
  • Service period: from the 1970s

About the manufacturer – IBG Models / Modelsvit:

This IBG Models boxing is based on plastic parts and photo-etched parts from the Ukrainian company Modelsvit, supplemented with IBG-prepared decals including a complete set of stencils for Polish aircraft. Modelsvit is a manufacturer known for short-run aircraft kits offering unusual subjects and rich detail, although they require a little more care during assembly than mass-produced tooling. IBG Models, in turn, is a Polish company from Warsaw, valued for Polish-themed models and careful, refined releases. Combining the Modelsvit parts with IBG-developed markings lets modellers build the Su-20 in the colours of the Polish Air Force.
