Rye Field Model Upgrade Solution Set for M-50 Sherman (RFM 5161) in 1:35 Scale – 3D Print and Photo-Etch

Rye Field Model 2124 is an Upgrade Solution set designed for the M-50 Sherman kit by Rye Field Model (no. 5161) in 1:35 scale. The set combines two complementary technologies: parts 3D-printed in resin (for complex three-dimensional shapes and volumetric details) and photo-etched metal components (for thin, flat elements such as grilles, perforated screens, brackets and fittings) — together raising the accuracy of the M-50 model to a level unachievable by injection moulding alone.

The set is dedicated specifically to the RFM 5161 tooling and belongs to the Upgrade Solution series — Rye Field Model's characteristic format of enhancement sets developed in parallel with their own base kits.

What's in the box:

3D-printed resin parts – precise volumetric detail

3D printing in resin enables the reproduction of complex three-dimensional shapes — stowage items, equipment details, running gear components — with geometric precision and edge sharpness that clearly surpass injection-moulded parts. On 1:35 scale armoured vehicles, such details stand out noticeably from their plastic counterparts, especially after applying washes and pigments that highlight surface relief. Resin parts are attached using cyanoacrylate adhesive; priming the resin surface beforehand is recommended.

Photo-etched parts – thin and delicate detailing components

Photo-etched metal components are brass or steel sheet chemically etched to a precision that allows the reproduction of grilles, ventilation screens, brackets and fittings at thicknesses impossible to achieve in plastic moulding. On armoured vehicle models, photo-etching is most commonly applied to engine deck grilles, equipment mounting details, guards and small exterior fittings that appear too thick or simplified in their plastic versions. Working with photo-etched parts requires precision modelling tweezers and cyanoacrylate adhesive or dedicated metal glue. Light surface treatment or priming of the sheet is recommended before painting.

About the vehicle – M-50 Sherman:

The M-50 Super Sherman is an Israeli upgrade of the M4 Sherman tank, carried out in the second half of the 1950s by the Israel Defence Forces in cooperation with France. The principal change was replacing the original 75 mm M3 gun with the French CN 75-50 cannon from the AMX-13, which significantly improved anti-armour capability. The upgrade also involved adapting the powerplant — early examples retained various petrol engines from the Shermans imported by Israel, while later versions (M-50 Mk.2) received the Continental AVDS-1790 diesel engine.

The M-50 saw extensive combat during the Six-Day War in 1967, when Israel deployed them in large numbers on all fronts. Israeli armoured units demonstrated exceptional operational effectiveness, defeating far more numerous Arab armoured forces. The combat lessons of that campaign shaped Israel's subsequent armoured doctrine and the further development of the Sherman family. After replacement by the more modern Centurion and Patton, a number of M-50s were transferred to Lebanon and other regional operators.

Original specifications (M-50 Sherman, early version):

  • Length with gun: approx. 6.9 m
  • Width: approx. 2.62 m
  • Height: approx. 2.74 m
  • Combat weight: approx. 35 t
  • Crew: 5 (commander, gunner, loader, driver, co-driver)
  • Main armament: CN 75-50 75 mm gun (French, from AMX-13)
  • Secondary armament: Browning M1919A4 .30 cal machine guns (coaxial and anti-aircraft)
  • Engine: petrol (various) or Continental AVDS-1790 diesel (Mk.2)
  • Maximum speed: approx. 38–48 km/h (depending on engine variant)
  • Armour: up to 76 mm (hull front), inherited from the base M4
  • IDF service years: approx. 1956–1973 (M-50)
