Plastic Model Kit of the USS Michael Murphy DDG-112 Guided Missile Destroyer in 1:200 Scale

I Love Kit 62011 is a plastic model kit reproducing the USS Michael Murphy (DDG-112) – an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer (Flight IIA) of the United States Navy. Michael Murphy was the last destroyer built to the Flight IIA standard before the transition to the upgraded Flight III configuration. The ship is named in honor of Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, a US Navy officer and Medal of Honor recipient killed in Afghanistan in 2005.

The kit features a full hull display model with extensive additional equipment, including photo-etched parts for superstructure detailing, a metal anchor chain, and an attractive display stand. The box also includes a miniature MH-60R Seahawk helicopter model in matching 1:200 scale.

Inside the box you will find:

  • Plastic sprues with hull, superstructure, and weapon system components
  • Photo-etched parts (ladders, railings, antennas, and other fine details)
  • Metal anchor chain
  • Display stand
  • SH-60B/MH-60R Seahawk helicopter model in 1:200 scale
  • Water-slide decal sheet
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Model technical details:

  • Scale: 1:200
  • Catalog number: 62011
  • Manufacturer: I Love Kit
  • Completed model length: approx. 800 mm
  • Hull type: full hull
  • Difficulty level: intermediate/advanced

Note: The kit does not include glue, paints, or modeling tools. The model requires assembly and painting.

Building the model:

A ship model of this class and scale is an ambitious project requiring patience, especially when assembling the photo-etched parts (railings, ladders) and the metal anchor chain. Cyanoacrylate glue is recommended for attaching photo-etched components to the plastic hull. It is best to assemble the superstructure and deck equipment in stages, painting individual sections before final assembly.

US Navy destroyers are painted in the standard Haze Grey scheme (FS26270) with dark gray decks (Deck Grey FS36076). After applying primer, a subtle wash is recommended to emphasize hull plating lines and deck details, along with weathering effects simulating operational wear and staining. A matte varnish finish is recommended for the final coat.

Essential tools:

  • Model sprue cutters for removing parts from sprues
  • Modeling knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper
  • Plastic cement (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
  • Cyanoacrylate glue for photo-etched and metal parts
  • Paint brushes in various sizes and precision tweezers
  • Model paints and matte varnish
  • Wash for highlighting details
