Plastic model kit of the American Willys MB 1/4 ton utility truck with canvas top in 1:35 scale

Takom 2214 is a model kit of the legendary American quarter-ton utility truck, the Willys MB - a vehicle known the world over simply as the jeep. The kit depicts it fitted with a canvas top, but also allows the model to be built without one, with the interior exposed.

The model offers a high level of detail: a fully detailed engine and engine bay, a folding windscreen that can be built raised or folded down onto the bonnet, with or without its protective cover, and an optional M2 Browning heavy machine gun. Photo-etched parts, clear parts, a figure and decals for four marking options complete the kit.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic sprues with body, chassis and engine parts
  • Clear parts
  • Photo-etched parts
  • Parts allowing the vehicle to be built with or without the canvas top
  • Windscreen buildable raised or folded, with or without its protective cover
  • Optional M2 Browning heavy machine gun
  • Figure
  • Decal sheet for four marking options
  • Illustrated instructions

Kit specifications:

  • Scale: 1:35
  • Catalogue number: 2214
  • Manufacturer: Takom
  • Assembled model length: approx. 96 mm
  • Contents: one vehicle
  • Skill level: intermediate (small parts, photo-etched components)

Note: Glue, paints and modelling tools are not included. This kit requires assembly.

Building the model:

Despite its small size the kit contains plenty of small parts, particularly in the engine bay and interior. Painting the interior and engine before closing up the body is recommended, and photo-etched parts are best attached with cyanoacrylate glue. Decide before starting whether the vehicle will carry the canvas top, as this affects how the interior is built - with the top in place, some detail will be hidden.

American vehicles of the Second World War were finished in overall Olive Drab. A wash to bring out the detail works well, followed by a matt coat. The jeep is a rewarding subject for service wear - dust, mud and paint chipping along the edges where soldiers climbed in and out. Adding the figure gives the model scale and brings the display to life.

Tools you will need:

  • Sprue cutters
  • Hobby knife or scalpel
  • Files and fine sanding paper
  • Plastic cement (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
  • Cyanoacrylate glue for the photo-etched parts
  • Precision modelling tweezers
  • Model paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • Panel wash to bring out detail
  • Optional: pigments for dust and mud effects

About the vehicle - Willys MB:

The Willys MB, universally known as the jeep, was a quarter-ton light utility vehicle developed for the US Army at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s. Its simple, rugged design, with four-wheel drive and a short wheelbase, gave it off-road ability no other vehicle in its class could match.

The jeep proved the most versatile vehicle of the war. It carried troops and casualties, towed light anti-tank guns and served as a radio, ambulance, reconnaissance and command vehicle. Improvised mounts carried machine guns - including the M2 Browning heavy machine gun used by reconnaissance units and special forces. Dwight Eisenhower named the jeep among the handful of designs that decided the Allied victory.

Alongside the Willys MB, identical vehicles were built under licence by Ford as the GPW. Several hundred thousand were produced in total, and after the war the jeep became the ancestor of an entire class of civilian off-road vehicles.

Original vehicle specifications (Willys MB):

  • Payload: 1/4 ton
  • Drivetrain: four-wheel drive
  • Engine: four-cylinder petrol, approx. 60 hp
  • Maximum speed: approx. 105 km/h
  • Capacity: up to 4 soldiers or equivalent load
  • Equipment: folding windscreen, removable canvas top
  • Roles: transport, reconnaissance, light artillery tractor, radio and ambulance vehicle
