Plastic model kit of the Italian AB 40 armoured car in its railway version (Autoblinda Ferroviaria) in 1:35 scale

Lanmo Model MM35011 represents the Italian Autoblinda AB 40 armoured car in its railway version, known as the Autoblinda Ferroviaria. The distinguishing feature of this version is the additional steel railway wheels, which allowed the vehicle to run on rails – it was used mainly to patrol and protect railway lines. The AB 40 was the variant armed with 8 mm machine guns.

The model combines plastic sprues with photo-etched parts and metal gun barrels. The characteristic multi-part rubber-tyred wheels are supplemented by the additional railway wheels specific to the Ferroviaria version, and the hatches can be shown open or closed. The kit does not include an interior – this is available as a separate set from the manufacturer.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic sprues with hull, turret and running-gear components
  • Photo-etched parts
  • Metal gun barrels
  • Multi-part rubber-tyred wheels and additional steel railway wheels
  • Decal sheet
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Model specifications:

  • Scale: 1:35
  • Catalogue number: MM35011
  • Manufacturer: Lanmo Model
  • Assembled length: approx. 149 mm
  • Difficulty level: intermediate

Note: This kit does not include cement, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Assembly:

This is a small but carefully detailed armoured-car model. The fine photo-etched parts and metal barrels are attached with cyanoacrylate glue; for the multi-part rubber-tyred wheels it is worth using thin glue applied sparingly to avoid fingerprints and smudges. The additional railway wheels call for careful alignment if the model is to sit on a track.

For painting, Italian schemes from World War II are recommended – uniform sand-yellow colours or a multi-tone camouflage, depending on the chosen option. The detail is worth emphasising with a wash, and the surfaces can be varied with shading. Detailed painting and marking suggestions are given in the manufacturer's instructions.

Required tools:

  • Modelling side cutters for removing parts from the sprues
  • Modelling knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper for cleaning up sprue gate marks
  • Plastic cement (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
  • Cyanoacrylate glue for photo-etched and metal parts
  • Precise modelling tweezers
  • Brushes and an airbrush for painting larger surfaces
  • Modelling paints, washes and pigments for finishing

About the vehicle – Autoblinda AB 40 (railway version):

The Autoblinda AB 40 was an Italian armoured car developed by the Fiat-Ansaldo concern in the late 1930s to replace the obsolete Lancia vehicles. The design was modern for its time – it stood out for its two driving positions (front and rear), which allowed the vehicle to be driven in both directions. The AB 40 was armed with 8 mm machine guns.

The railway version (Ferroviaria) was adapted to run on rails thanks to additional steel railway wheels. These vehicles were used mainly to patrol and protect railway lines, including in the Balkans, where they secured transport against attacks. The ability to drive the vehicle in both directions was particularly useful in this role.

The armoured cars of the Autoblinda family were among the most successful Italian vehicles of their class during the war and served on many fronts. The railway version is their rarer, distinctive variant, attractive both as a standalone model and as part of a diorama with a section of track.

Original vehicle specifications (Autoblinda AB 40):

  • Length: approx. 5.2 m
  • Width: approx. 1.93 m
  • Height: approx. 2.48 m
  • Combat weight: approx. 7 t
  • Crew: 4 (two driving positions – front and rear)
  • Armament: 8 mm machine guns
  • Powerplant: petrol engine of approx. 80 hp
  • Maximum speed: approx. 78 km/h (on road)
  • Range: approx. 400 km
  • Armour: approx. 6–40 mm

About the manufacturer – Lanmo Model:

Lanmo Model is a model manufacturer specialising in less obvious armour subjects and armoured cars in 1:35 scale, such as the Italian L6/40, the Italian Autoblinda AB40/41 and the Soviet BA-64. The brand also readily offers separate interior sets, letting only those modellers who want the extra detail buy it. Lanmo Model kits are aimed at enthusiasts of rarer designs and subjects beyond the most popular vehicles.
