Plastic model kit of the Italian Carro Armato L6/40 light tank in 1:35 scale

Lanmo Model MM35009 represents the production version of the Italian Carro Armato L6/40 light tank – a vehicle developed by the Fiat-Ansaldo concern and adopted into service in the early 1940s. Unlike the early prototype, armed with machine guns, the production version received a rotating turret with a 20 mm Breda gun and a coaxial machine gun.

The model combines plastic sprues with photo-etched parts and a metal barrel for the main gun. The kit does not include an interior – for those interested, it is available as a separate set from the manufacturer, so that the extra detail is bought only by modellers who want to use it.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic sprues with hull, turret and running-gear components
  • Photo-etched parts
  • Metal barrel for the 20 mm gun
  • Decal sheet
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Model specifications:

  • Scale: 1:35
  • Catalogue number: MM35009
  • Manufacturer: Lanmo Model
  • Assembled length: approx. 108 mm
  • Difficulty level: intermediate

Note: This kit does not include cement, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Assembly:

This is a small but well-detailed light-tank model. The fine photo-etched parts and the metal gun barrel are attached with cyanoacrylate glue; precise tweezers and a sharp tool are useful here. Given the vehicle's riveted construction, it is worth taking care over the rendering of the surfaces and joints.

For painting, Italian schemes from World War II are recommended – uniform sand-yellow colours or a multi-tone camouflage, depending on the chosen option. The detail is worth emphasising with a wash, and the surfaces can be varied with shading. Detailed painting and marking suggestions are given in the manufacturer's instructions.

Required tools:

  • Modelling side cutters for removing parts from the sprues
  • Modelling knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper for cleaning up sprue gate marks
  • Plastic cement (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
  • Cyanoacrylate glue for photo-etched and metal parts
  • Precise modelling tweezers
  • Brushes and an airbrush for painting larger surfaces
  • Modelling paints, washes and pigments for finishing

About the vehicle – Carro Armato L6/40:

The Carro Armato L6/40 was an Italian light tank developed by the Fiat-Ansaldo concern in the late 1930s. It was originally created as a six-tonne export design (hence the "L6" designation), and in 1940 it was adopted into Italian army service to replace the obsolete L3 tankettes.

The vehicle had a riveted hull and a rotating turret, which set it apart from the earlier tankettes. In its production form it was armed with a 20 mm Breda gun and a coaxial machine gun. Its limited armour and firepower meant the L6/40 was suited above all to reconnaissance and auxiliary tasks, although in Italian conditions it also served as a standard light tank.

The L6/40 entered service in 1941 and fought on various fronts, including the Balkans, the Eastern Front and North Africa. Although it was quickly outclassed by more modern enemy designs, it remains a characteristic representative of Italian armour of the period.

Original vehicle specifications (L6/40):

  • Length: approx. 3.78 m
  • Width: approx. 1.92 m
  • Height: approx. 2.03 m
  • Combat weight: approx. 6.8 t
  • Crew: 2
  • Main armament: 20 mm Breda Mod.35 gun
  • Secondary armament: coaxial 8 mm machine gun
  • Powerplant: petrol engine of approx. 70 hp
  • Maximum speed: approx. 42 km/h
  • Armour: up to approx. 30–40 mm

About the manufacturer – Lanmo Model:

Lanmo Model is a model manufacturer specialising in less obvious armour subjects and armoured cars in 1:35 scale, such as the Italian L6/40, the Italian Autoblinda AB40/41 and the Soviet BA-64. The brand also readily offers separate interior sets, letting only those modellers who want the extra detail buy it. Lanmo Model kits are aimed at enthusiasts of rarer designs and subjects beyond the most popular vehicles.
