Plastic model kit of the Soviet T-54B medium tank in 1:72 scale

Takom 5025 is a model kit of the Soviet T-54B medium tank - the last and most refined member of the T-54 family, directly preceding the T-55. Its key innovation was the two-plane gun stabiliser, which allowed accurate fire while on the move.

The kit is generously equipped for 1:72 scale: photo-etched parts, metal tow cables and link-and-length tracks combining individual links with longer runs. The decal sheet covers three marking options.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic sprues with hull, turret and running gear parts
  • Photo-etched parts
  • Metal tow cables
  • Link-and-length tracks: individual links and longer runs
  • Decal sheet for three marking options
  • Illustrated instructions

Kit specifications:

  • Scale: 1:72
  • Catalogue number: 5025
  • Manufacturer: Takom
  • Model length with gun forward: approx. 125 mm; hull length: approx. 90 mm
  • Skill level: intermediate (small photo-etched parts, link-and-length tracks)

Note: Glue, paints and modelling tools are not included. This kit requires assembly.

Building the model:

In 1:72 the parts are small, so precision tweezers and good bench lighting are worth having. The link-and-length tracks are built in runs: longer sections along the straights, individual links around the drive and idler wheels. Photo-etched parts and the metal tow cables are attached with cyanoacrylate glue.

T-54s were usually finished in overall green, in the shade typical of the Soviet Army and the Warsaw Pact. Export vehicles also wore desert schemes and multi-colour camouflage. A wash to bring out weld seams and detail works well, finished with a matt coat. Dust and mud on the running gear are best reproduced with pigments - in small scale these effects do the most to bring a model to life.

Tools you will need:

  • Sprue cutters
  • Hobby knife or scalpel
  • Files and fine sanding paper
  • Plastic cement (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
  • Cyanoacrylate glue for photo-etched parts and metal cables
  • Precision modelling tweezers
  • Model paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • Panel wash to bring out detail
  • Optional: pigments for dust and mud effects

About the vehicle - T-54B:

The T-54 was a Soviet medium tank designed at the end of the Second World War and put into production in the second half of the 1940s. Together with the developed T-55 it became one of the most widely produced tanks in history - counting licence production and derivatives such as the Chinese Type 59, tens of thousands were built. Vehicles of this family served with dozens of armies and took part in almost every conflict of the second half of the twentieth century.

The T-54B, designed in 1955 and produced from 1957 until the spring of 1959, replaced the T-54A on the production lines. Its most important innovation was fitting the 100 mm D-10T2S gun with the two-plane STP-2 "Cyclone" stabiliser, holding the barrel on target while the tank was moving - a significant step towards effective fire on the move.

In the final months of production the T-54B also received night vision equipment: the L-2 "Luna" infrared searchlight, a gunner's night sight and a commander's searchlight. These solutions were then carried over to the T-55, its direct successor.

Original vehicle specifications (T-54B):

  • Combat weight: approx. 36 t
  • Crew: 4
  • Main armament: 100 mm D-10T2S gun with two-plane STP-2 "Cyclone" stabiliser
  • Powerplant: V-54 diesel engine, approx. 520 hp
  • Suspension: torsion bar
  • Special equipment: night vision - L-2 "Luna" infrared searchlight, gunner's night sight, commander's searchlight (on late-production vehicles)
  • Design: 1955
  • Production: 1957 - April 1959

About the manufacturer - Takom:

Takom is a Chinese model company that within little more than a decade has become one of the leading producers of 1:35 armour kits. The brand is known for generously equipped boxes - workable suspension, individual link tracks, photo-etched parts and, in many cases, full vehicle interiors. Its catalogue spans a broad range of subjects: tanks of both world wars, post-war designs and contemporary vehicles. For several years Takom has also developed a line of 1:72 armour kits which, despite their small size, maintain a high level of detail.
