Plastic model kit of the German Sd.Kfz.250/9 Ausf.A reconnaissance vehicle with 2 cm cannon in 1:35 scale

Takom 2213 is a model kit of the German Sd.Kfz.250/9 light half-track reconnaissance vehicle in the Ausf.A version - the early variant with a hull built from numerous faceted, angled armour plates, costly and labour-intensive to produce and later replaced by the simplified Ausf.B.

The model features workable individual link tracks, workable suspension and hatches that can be built open or closed. The kit includes photo-etched parts, clear parts, a figure and decals for four marking options.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic sprues with hull, turret and running gear parts
  • Clear parts
  • Photo-etched parts
  • Workable individual link tracks
  • Workable suspension
  • Hatches that can be built open or closed
  • Figure
  • Decal sheet for four marking options
  • Illustrated instructions

Kit specifications:

  • Scale: 1:35
  • Catalogue number: 2213
  • Manufacturer: Takom
  • Assembled model length: approx. 130 mm
  • Skill level: intermediate/advanced (individual link tracks, photo-etched parts)

Note: Glue, paints and modelling tools are not included. This kit requires assembly.

Building the model:

The workable individual link tracks are the most demanding stage - they call for patience, but allow a natural sag and a convincing fit over the road wheels. Building them in runs and dry-fitting against the running gear works well. Photo-etched parts are best attached with cyanoacrylate glue.

Late-war German vehicles wore the three-colour scheme: a Dunkelgelb base with green and brown patches, often applied in the field. Earlier machines carried overall Panzergrau. A wash to bring out weld seams and rivets works well, finished with a matt coat. Open hatches and the exposed turret provide the ideal setting for the figure - adding it brings the model to life and gives it scale.

To raise the level of detail you might consider aftermarket accessories available separately in our shop - a turned metal cannon barrel or a photo-etched detail set for this kit.

Tools you will need:

  • Sprue cutters
  • Hobby knife or scalpel
  • Files and sanding paper for cleaning up gate marks
  • Plastic cement (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
  • Cyanoacrylate glue for the photo-etched parts
  • Precision modelling tweezers
  • Model paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • Panel wash to bring out detail
  • Optional: pigments for dust and mud effects

About the vehicle - Sd.Kfz.250/9 Ausf.A:

The Sd.Kfz.250 was a German light half-track developed from an artillery tractor and introduced in 1941. Shorter and lighter than the widely used Sd.Kfz.251, it proved effective as a reconnaissance, liaison and command vehicle, and its chassis became the basis for more than a dozen specialised variants.

The Sd.Kfz.250/9 was created by mounting an open-topped turret armed with a rapid-firing 2 cm KwK 38 cannon and a coaxial MG 34 machine gun - the same turret used on the Sd.Kfz.222 armoured car. The vehicle combined the cross-country mobility of the half-track chassis with enough firepower to engage lightly armoured targets and strongpoints. It served with the reconnaissance battalions of the panzer divisions, mainly on the Eastern Front.

The Ausf.A version is distinguished by a hull built from numerous faceted armour plates set at varying angles - effective, but expensive and time-consuming to produce. In 1943 it was replaced by the simplified Ausf.B, with a hull made from fewer parts, cheaper and quicker to build.

Original vehicle specifications (Sd.Kfz.250/9 Ausf.A):

  • Weight: approx. 5.8 t
  • Crew: 3
  • Main armament: 2 cm KwK 38 rapid-fire cannon in an open-topped turret
  • Secondary armament: coaxial 7.92 mm MG 34 machine gun
  • Powerplant: Maybach petrol engine, approx. 100 hp
  • Maximum speed: approx. 60 km/h on roads
  • Running gear: half-track
  • Roles: armed reconnaissance, escort of march columns

About the manufacturer - Takom:
