Plastic model kit of the German Sd.Kfz.184 Elefant heavy tank destroyer with full interior in 1:35 scale

Amusing Hobby 35A057 represents the Schwerer Jagdpanzer Sd.Kfz.184 Elefant – the improved version of the famous Ferdinand tank destroyer, armed with the powerful 8.8 cm Pak 43/2 L/71 gun. This is a new release of the model in which the Zimmerit (anti-magnetic coating) is reproduced directly on the hull parts, with the design enhanced by an improved rear hatch.

The model stands out for its full interior and clear parts, which allow the richly reproduced engine and fighting compartments to be displayed. The kit is rounded out with workable track links, photo-etched parts and a wire tow cable.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic sprues with Zimmerit moulded onto the hull parts
  • Full interior: two Maybach HL 120 engines, a fully detailed 8.8 cm Pak 43 L/71 gun, MG 34, ammunition stowage
  • Clear hull/roof parts for displaying the interior
  • Improved rear hatch
  • Workable track links
  • Photo-etched parts
  • Wire tow cable
  • Decal sheet and illustrated assembly instructions

Model specifications:

  • Scale: 1:35
  • Catalogue number: 35A057
  • Manufacturer: Amusing Hobby
  • Assembled length: approx. 233 mm
  • Difficulty level: advanced

Note: This kit does not include cement, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Assembly:

This is an elaborate model with a full interior, aimed at experienced modellers. The build is best done in stages: from the engine and fighting compartments, through the hull, to the running gear and tracks. The interior is worth painting and washing before it is closed up, and if it is to remain visible, the supplied clear parts can be used. Photo-etched and metal parts are attached with cyanoacrylate glue.

For painting, German schemes from 1943–1944 are recommended – a Dunkelgelb base with green and brown patches over the reproduced Zimmerit surface. The detail is worth emphasising with a wash, and the Zimmerit coating can be further brought out with shading. Detailed painting and marking suggestions are given in the manufacturer's instructions.

Required tools:

  • Modelling side cutters for removing parts from the sprues
  • Modelling knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper for cleaning up sprue gate marks
  • Plastic cement (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
  • Cyanoacrylate glue for photo-etched and metal parts
  • Precise modelling tweezers
  • Brushes and an airbrush for painting larger surfaces
  • Modelling paints, washes and pigments for finishing

About the vehicle – Sd.Kfz.184 Elefant:

The Elefant was the improved version of the German Ferdinand heavy tank destroyer, designed on a Porsche chassis and armed with the long-barrelled 8.8 cm Pak 43/2 L/71 gun of exceptional penetrating power. The Ferdinands made their combat debut in the summer of 1943 at Kursk, where they effectively destroyed enemy vehicles at long range but revealed a serious flaw – the lack of a machine gun for defence against infantry.

The surviving examples were rebuilt in 1943–1944 to create the Elefant version. A hull machine gun (MG 34), a commander's cupola and an anti-magnetic Zimmerit coating were added, along with other improvements increasing the vehicle's survivability. So modernised, these machines fought in Italy and on the Eastern Front, among other places.

With a combat weight of around 65 tonnes and thick frontal armour, the Elefant remains one of the heaviest and most distinctive tank destroyers of World War II. It was produced in small numbers, which makes it a particularly attractive subject for collectors.

Original vehicle specifications (Sd.Kfz.184 Elefant):

  • Length (with gun): approx. 8.14 m
  • Width: approx. 3.38 m
  • Height: approx. 2.97 m
  • Combat weight: approx. 65 t
  • Crew: 6
  • Main armament: 8.8 cm Pak 43/2 L/71 gun
  • Secondary armament: 7.92 mm MG 34 machine gun
  • Powerplant: two Maybach HL 120 engines with electric transmission
  • Maximum speed: approx. 30 km/h (road)
  • Range: approx. 150 km
  • Armour: up to approx. 200 mm (front)
  • Production: Ferdinand approx. 91 examples (1943), of which approx. 48 rebuilt as Elefant (1943–1944)
