1:48 scale plastic set of German fuel drop tanks and bombs

MiniArt 49021 is a self-assembly accessory set containing German fuel drop tanks and bombs in 1:48 scale. It is underwing equipment intended to enrich models of German WWII aircraft – it lets you complete an aircraft's stores or build a scene of an aircraft being prepared for flight.

The set finely reproduces the shapes of the tanks and bombs, and includes photo-etched parts for precise details along with decals carrying markings. This means you can not only vary the aircraft model itself but also build an effective diorama with ordnance laid out at a field airbase.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic parts for the fuel tanks and bombs
  • Photo-etched parts
  • Decal sheet with markings
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Kit specifications:

  • Scale: 1:48
  • Catalogue number: 49021
  • Manufacturer: MiniArt
  • Skill level: beginner/intermediate (photo-etched parts)

Note: The kit does not include glue, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Building the model:

Assembly is approachable, though it is worth fitting the tank halves carefully and filling and smoothing the seams to achieve a smooth surface. Modelling tweezers and cyanoacrylate glue are useful for the photo-etched parts. The paint scheme depends on the particular aircraft the item is to be attached to; details and recesses can be emphasised with a wash, and the whole finished with a varnish chosen to match the look of the aircraft.

Tools you will need:

  • Modelling side cutters for removing parts from the sprues
  • Hobby knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper for smoothing sprue-gate marks and seams
  • Modelling filler
  • Plastic cement and cyanoacrylate glue for the photo-etched parts
  • Precision modelling tweezers
  • Modelling paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • A wash to bring out the details

About the set – drop tanks and bombs:

Fuel drop tanks extended the range of aircraft, which was crucial during escort flights and long-range missions. The tanks were jettisoned once empty or when combat was imminent. Bombs, in turn, were the basic underwing ordnance of aircraft performing ground-attack and bombing tasks.

The ability to vary the underwing stores gives aircraft models individual character and roots them more firmly in a specific mission context. Accessories of this type are also a rewarding element of airfield dioramas in which ordnance is being prepared for loading.
