1:35 scale plastic model kit of the German Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf. D/B tank with crew

MiniArt 53085 is an assembly kit reproducing the early German medium tank Pz.Kpfw.III in its Ausf. D/B version, supplied complete with two crew figures. The Ausf. D is one of the formative, early variants of the Panzer III, with structural solutions characteristic of the family's initial development period.

This is a kit that combines a finely detailed vehicle model with a crew – the two figures are posed on the turret, quickly giving the model "life". The model offers individual-link tracks, photo-etched parts and hatches that can be posed open or closed. It is a rewarding subject for dioramas set in the pre-war period and the early Second World War.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic parts for the hull, turret and fittings
  • Individual-link tracks
  • Hatches that can be posed open or closed
  • Photo-etched parts
  • Clear parts
  • 2 crew figures
  • Decal sheet for 4 marking options
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Kit specifications:

  • Scale: 1:35
  • Catalogue number: 53085
  • Manufacturer: MiniArt
  • Assembled length: approx. 163 mm
  • Skill level: intermediate/advanced (link tracks, photo-etched parts, figures)

Note: The kit does not include glue, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Building the model:

The model is elaborate and includes individual-link tracks, which require patience but give a realistic sag effect. Modelling tweezers and cyanoacrylate glue are useful for the small photo-etched parts. It is worth planning the hatches with display in mind – open hatches let you show the interior and crew. Early German vehicles are typically finished in dark grey (RAL 7021 Dunkelgrau); details and recesses can be emphasised with a wash, with a matt varnish as the final coat.

Tools you will need:

  • Modelling side cutters for removing parts from the sprues
  • Hobby knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper for smoothing sprue-gate marks
  • Plastic cement and cyanoacrylate glue for the photo-etched parts
  • Precision modelling tweezers
  • Brushes of various sizes
  • Modelling paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • A wash to bring out the details

About the vehicle – Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf. D/B:

The Panzerkampfwagen III was a German medium tank designed in the late 1930s as the principal combat vehicle for fighting enemy armour. The early versions, including the Ausf. B and D, were built in small numbers and served mainly to test design solutions – among them the suspension, which was repeatedly modified in later versions.

The Ausf. D received a new commander's cupola and a modified suspension, but the early Panzer III versions, with their thin armour and immature components, were soon withdrawn from the front line. Some returned to use during the Norwegian campaign. For modellers, the early Panzer III variants are an interesting subject showing the beginnings of one of the Wehrmacht's key armoured designs.

Original vehicle specifications (Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf. D):

  • Type: medium tank (Sd.Kfz. 141)
  • Crew: 5
  • Main armament: 3.7 cm KwK 36 L/46.5 gun
  • Secondary armament: MG 34 machine guns
  • Powerplant: Maybach petrol engine
  • Armour: up to approx. 30 mm at the front
  • Period: late 1930s / early WWII, produced in a small series
