Description

Model of a four-axle powder silo wagon, type Uacs-y, in Deutsche Reichsbahn livery

A model of a four-axle powder silo wagon, type Uacs-y, representing the freight rolling stock of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) — the state railway of the German Democratic Republic — in Era IV. This is a wagon for carrying powdered and dusty bulk goods, not a liquid tank wagon. The H0 scale model is made by Roco.

The wagon stands out with its rich, multi-colour printing and "Plaste Schkopau" lettering, referring to the chemical works at Schkopau — one of the main plastics producers in the GDR — whose granulate was carried by wagons of this kind. The wagon features an NEM 362 coupler pocket with close-coupling kinematics (KK-Kinematik), which lets the wagons sit close together on straight track and move apart on curves.

Specifications (model):

  • Scale: H0 (1:87)
  • Catalogue number: 6600254
  • Manufacturer: Roco
  • Type: four-axle powder silo wagon, type Uacs-y
  • Length over buffers: 219 mm
  • Era: IV (1970–1990)
  • Operator: Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR)
  • Rich, multi-colour printing with "Plaste Schkopau" lettering
  • Power system: DC — two-rail layout version
  • Coupling: NEM 362 pocket with close-coupling kinematics (KK-Kinematik)
  • The wagon is painted and ready to run
  • AC (three-rail) wheelsets are available separately (cat. no. 40196)
  • Recommended age: 14 and over

Note: the wagon is unpowered and requires a locomotive and a powered track.

This is passive freight rolling stock — the wagon has no motor or electronics and does not form a starter set (no track, locomotive or controller is included). A locomotive and a powered H0 track are needed to run it. The version shown here is intended for two-rail layouts supplied with direct current (DC).

Model railways – DC (two-rail) or AC (three-rail) track?

Two track-power systems are used in H0 model railways: two-rail direct current (DC), where the voltage is fed through both rails, and three-rail alternating current (AC), drawn additionally from centre studs in the track. Wagons differ between these systems only in the construction of their wheelsets. This model is the DC version; for AC layouts, separate wheelsets are available under catalogue number 40196. Because the wagon itself has no decoder, whether the train is controlled in analogue or digital DCC mode depends solely on the locomotive hauling it.

About the Uacs powder silo wagons:

Uacs powder silo wagons are used to carry powdered and dusty bulk goods — among others cement, lime, flour and plastic granulate. The load is carried in enclosed silo containers, and unloading is done pneumatically, with compressed air, through pipes at the bottom of the containers. Unlike tank wagons intended for liquids, these wagons carry only dry, moisture-sensitive bulk and powdered materials.

The wagon modelled here is in the livery of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) in Era IV (1970–1990). The "Plaste Schkopau" lettering refers to the chemical works at Schkopau, one of the leading plastics producers in the GDR; rolling stock of this kind was used to transport plastic granulate and powders.

Specifications (prototype – Uacs powder silo wagon):

  • Type: four-axle powder silo wagon (for powdered and dusty bulk goods)
  • Number of axles: 4
  • Purpose: carriage of powdered and dusty bulk goods (e.g. cement, lime, plastic granulate)
  • Unloading method: pneumatic (compressed air)
  • Operator of the modelled vehicle: Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR), Era IV
