About the Soya:

Soya was originally built before World War II but became famous as a Japanese Antarctic expedition ship during the 1950s. The vessel was adapted for operations in harsh icy conditions and for supplying polar research stations. Soya became especially well known because of the story of sled dogs left behind in Antarctica during one expedition, some of which survived until the next mission returned. This remarkable story inspired numerous books and films. Today, Soya is preserved as a museum ship in Tokyo.
