1:72 scale plastic model kit of the Italian 3Ro truck with Viberti tank trailer

IBG 72167 is an assembly kit reproducing an Italian WWII transport combination: the heavy 3Ro truck coupled with a Viberti tank trailer. Rigs of this kind were used to move armoured and tracked vehicles over long distances, without needlessly wearing out their engines and suspensions on a road march under their own power.

The model combines the well-known 3Ro truck tooling with a transport trailer, letting you recreate a characteristic element of the logistical rear of the Italian armoured forces. It is a rewarding subject for dioramas in which a tank or self-propelled gun is shown being loaded, transported or unloaded.

Building the model:

The kit consists of two elements – the truck and the trailer – which offers plenty of arrangement options but calls for care with the trailer's running gear and the small details in 1:72 scale. Italian vehicles are typically finished in continental grey-green tones or sand schemes from the African theatre; details and recesses can be emphasised with a wash, and dust and mud achieved with pigments. The whole is best finished with a matt varnish.

• Hobby knife or scalpel
• Files and sandpaper for smoothing sprue-gate marks
• Plastic cement
• Precision modelling tweezers
• Brushes of various sizes or an airbrush
• Modelling paints (acrylic or enamel)
• A wash and pigments for dust and mud effects

About the vehicle – 3Ro and the Viberti trailer:

The 3Ro truck was one of the principal heavy trucks of the Italian army during the Second World War. Powered by a diesel engine and valued for its durability and load capacity, it was used to carry supplies, tow guns and – in special configurations – transport heavy equipment.

Coupling the 3Ro with a Viberti tank trailer created a rig intended for transporting tanks and other tracked vehicles. Road transport on the trailer saved the engines and suspensions of the combat vehicles and allowed them to be moved between operational areas faster, independently of railway lines. Although the rig itself was not a combat vehicle, it played an important role in maintaining the mobility and readiness of Italian armoured units.
