1:35 scale plastic model kit of the German Kfz.2/40 repair car (Type 170VK)

MiniArt 35495 is an assembly kit reproducing the Kfz.2/40 – a light Wehrmacht repair car built on the civilian-derived Mercedes-Benz Type 170VK chassis. In its Kfz.2/40 form the vehicle was adapted for workshop duties: servicing and repairing signals equipment in field conditions. The model belongs to MiniArt's popular range based on the Mercedes 170V family.

This is an elaborate kit offering a full, detailed interior and a reproduced engine. The bonnet, doors and rear compartment can be posed open, revealing details of the engine, workshop equipment and cabin. Some of the thinner parts are supplied as photo-etched parts, which increases the precision of the details.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic parts for the body, chassis and interior
  • Full, detailed interior and a reproduced engine
  • Openable body sections: bonnet, doors, rear compartment
  • Repair equipment: tools, bottles, a jerry can
  • Photo-etched parts
  • Clear parts (windows, lights)
  • Decal sheet for 3 marking options
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Kit specifications:

  • Scale: 1:35
  • Catalogue number: 35495
  • Manufacturer: MiniArt
  • Assembled length: approx. 122 mm
  • Skill level: intermediate/advanced (full interior, engine, photo-etched parts)

Note: The kit does not include glue, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Building the model:

The model is elaborate and includes many small parts, so we recommend it to modellers with some experience. It is worth painting the full interior and engine before closing up the body, as access to these areas will later be limited. Modelling tweezers and cyanoacrylate glue are useful for precise work with the photo-etched parts. Wehrmacht vehicles of this period are typically finished in grey (Dunkelgrau) or dark yellow (Dunkelgelb); details and recesses can be emphasised with a wash, with a matt varnish as the final coat.

Tools you will need:

  • Modelling side cutters for removing parts from the sprues
  • Hobby knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper for smoothing sprue-gate marks
  • Plastic cement and cyanoacrylate glue for the photo-etched parts
  • Precision modelling tweezers
  • Brushes of various sizes
  • Modelling paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • A wash to bring out the details

About the vehicle – Kfz.2/40 (Type 170VK):

Kfz.2/40 is the designation of the repair variant of a light Wehrmacht car on the Mercedes-Benz Type 170VK chassis. The basis was the popular, civilian-derived Mercedes 170V, adapted for military use. The repair version acted as a mobile workshop for servicing and repairing signals equipment, fitted with the appropriate tools and gear.

Light cars of this family were unobtrusive and reliable, well suited to auxiliary, liaison and service tasks away from the front line. Today they make an attractive modelling subject, especially in scenes depicting the technical and logistical rear of the German army.

Original vehicle specifications (based on the Mercedes-Benz 170V):

  • Base design: Mercedes-Benz Type 170V
  • Drivetrain: 4x2
  • Engine: four-cylinder inline, approx. 1.7-litre capacity
  • Crew / occupants: driver and workshop personnel
  • Role: mobile workshop for repairing signals equipment
  • Period of use: Second World War
