H0 scale model of the SM42 diesel locomotive operated by Cemet – analogue version from the PIKO Expert series

PIKO 59277 is a detailed H0 scale model of the SM42 diesel locomotive, derived from the SP42 design and representing a private operator Cemet locomotive in Era VI livery. The model belongs to the PIKO Expert series and is designed for analogue DC operation.

  • Scale: H0 (1:87)
  • Model length (over buffers): 164 mm
  • Railway administration: private operator (Cemet)
  • Era: VI
  • Series: PIKO Expert
  • Minimum radius: 358 mm
  • Control system: analogue (DC)
  • Decoder interface: NEM 652 – 8-pin
  • Lighting: directional white/red headlights
  • Traction tyres: 2
  • Drive: motor driving all axles via cardan shafts
  • Couplings: NEM shaft (no close coupling mechanism)
  • The model is painted and ready to run

The model accurately reproduces the proportions of the real SM42 locomotive. The body features authentic ventilation grilles, access hatches, handrails and safety railings, while the sharply detailed bogies show suspension elements and axlebox covers.

The drive system provides smooth running and sufficient tractive effort for shunting duties and short freight trains. The model is prepared for easy digital and sound upgrade with space for a large loudspeaker.

Electric model trains – digital or analogue control?

In analogue systems, locomotive speed is regulated by varying the track voltage, causing all locomotives on the same section to move simultaneously.

Digital control allows independent operation of multiple locomotives on the same layout. By installing a suitable decoder, the model can be upgraded with advanced lighting and sound functions.

About the SM42 diesel locomotive

The SM42 class is one of the most widespread diesel shunting locomotive types in Poland. Designed primarily for yard work and light line service, it has been used by both state and private operators.

In Era VI, many SM42 locomotives are operated by private companies, performing shunting tasks, industrial services and local freight operations.
